Trade is not your average happy feel good movie; rather, it is an often gut wrenching drama that should spark some deep emotion in any person with a beating heart. It is about the sex slave trade and how one girl gets caught in the game. The 13 year old is minding her own business when a couple guys kidnap her right off of the street in broad daylight. Then her older brother begins his quest to seek out his sister and revenge against those who took her. Along the way the boy meets up with a Texas investigator who happens along the same path in search of a missing child.

Although the subject matter will not be easy for most to take in, Trade was well worth the watch. I found myself caring more and more about the characters as the film went along and when someone got hurt it meant something. All too often in films there is a lack of emotion and character depth. Trade brings home a decent amount of emotion without making you feel like losing faith in humanity. Each character has a purpose and drive that is unique from the other characters and it makes the film well rounded.

The directing aside from the flow and character building is nothing too spectacular. More specifically the cinematography falls a little behind the rest of the film’s quality. This is not to say that the directing was bad in any way, but it could have been more interesting to watch at times. The other slightly less impressive quality of the film was the acting. Although there were a few star quality moments, there was not an actor that consistently stuck out as impressive. None really came off as being particularly bad either though. Kevin Kline has done better work and seemed a little dry in this one, but his character is sort of spent on all of this sex slave trade stuff so it almost makes sense that he doesn’t bring home the most inviting personality.

All in all the film was able to make me feel sadness; although that would be considered bad by a lot of people, I find it to be a plus. If a movie is able to invoke a reasonably honest emotion within me then I find that it has accomplished something of worth. If I had watched Trade and not sympathized with the characters and the situations they dealt with then I would have said Trade was not a good movie. On the other hand, most people are looking for movies that are simply entertainment, so if you are looking for the cheap laughs this is not your bag.
