Sidney Lumet: Equus (1977)

This is a short review really only because Equus left me speechless. It is a wonderfully shocking film that should only be viewed by real avid moviegoers. This film is not a walk in the park.

Equus not only proves Lumet is a great director, but it proves he is willing to make a bold statement in film. He pushes the envelope for what people are willing to see and adds the shock value into film that so many directors fail to. Dare I say it was like watching a Stanley Kubrick film. It truly was with the scenes after scenes of things that you just would never expect to see. Whether it is good or bad, you have to admit that it makes for an interesting film. It is even odd that the whole focus of the film is a boy’s relationship with horses. Even the thought of going crazy over this story is absurd yet Lumet is able to delve you so deep into it with shocking images and intensity building storyline that by the end you have no doubts that the story should drive people mad. Is a horse enough to drive you mad; Lumet would like you to question it.

Equus is absolutely brilliant in its delivery. With all of the disturbing images and scenes Equus is not for the casual moviegoer, but fans of Kubrick will certainly love this film. It seems that Lumet always had great talent as a true filmmaker, but has been overshadowed or forgotten because of great filmmakers like Kubrick or simple mainstream flicks that make people forget about what film is really about.
