Movie Review – Star Trek (2009)

star-trek-1

Director: J.J. Abrams
Writer: Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman
Genre: Sci-Fi/Action

Although it is not as much of an “everybody” as it is being made out to be, it certainly is leaps and bounds closer to that than other Star Trek films in the past. I have to hand it to J.J. Abrams for truly reviving the series and making it possible for a wider audience to enjoy. Even though it is much more universal in its presentation, it is still a Sci-fi movie. If you do not like Sci-fi then it will still not be for you, but if you can tolerate Sci-fi then this is a great film. The action, drama, comedy, and adventure of the film will likely offer enough to appeal to most.

The journey in this film starts before the originals with the main characters as they were first getting involved in the space missions. This was certainly an interesting approach which allowed the film to feel very fresh and at the same time stay true to its roots. The actors are younger and hipper than previous films, allowing the younger crowd to appreciate the film even if they have not seen any other Star Trek film. I must admit I have not seen all of the Star Trek films or watched all of the shows, but I have seen enough to know that this film gives a lot for the new crowd and the old crowd.

star-trek-3

The action is clean and fast paced and the way the film is shot makes Star Trek look better than it ever has before. Even the character development was strong with the well constructed script and storyline. There were a lot of relationships that had to be established in this film to make it feel like it fit into the series and it was more than able to accomplish that goal. The acting was rarely suspect and most often really good. Although none of the parts seemed to require a very challenging role, the acting was solid. The directing also aided in making the character interactions flow well with the story and mood of the film.

Overall, you will not find a Star Trek film with as much action, drama, and comedy all together in one package. Combining that with the universal appeal of the film quality and actors makes this true genius on the part of J.J. Abrams. I can’t wait to see more films that he is involved in because he is not afraid to take real risks and break the mold that has been set before him. The film is even PG-13 without sacrificing much in the way of action and thrills. If you are a Trekkie or have never seen anything even related to Star Trek you have a good chance of liking this film.

Cloverfield (2008)

Brief Detail

Director: Matt Reeves
Writer: Drew Goddard
Release Date: 18 January 2008
Genre: Action/Sci-Fi/Thriller

Plot

This movie follows a small group of people in New York as they witness and experience an attack on the city by a monster. Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David) is going away to Japan for his new job and is having a go away party which is being filmed by his friend Hud Platt (T.J. Miller). During the party the attack happens Rob, Hud, Rob’s brother Jason (Mike Vogel), Lily Ford (Jessica Lucas), and Marlena Diamond (Lizzy Caplan) set out to evacuate the city. When Rob gets a call from the girl that he really likes, Beth McIntyre (Odette Yustman), they set out to save her. The story is simple but there is plenty of thrills, action, and emotion to carry the movie.

Performance

The performances were all very good. Stahl-David is the main character and shows a good range of emotion and delivers a clutch performance. Miller, although behind the camera, provides the comic relief as the group goes through the city. Miller delivered the lines very well to get the humor that the films needs. Lucas does good, but there could have been more emotion shown from her which could actually be more of a directing issue. It is a difficult balance between realism and story. Caplan was an interesting character and although she did not say much her quirkiness added a lot to the film. Yustman delivered a solid performance, but she was not in the movie enough to really show her ability. The way that the movie was shot made the conversations between the characters much more realistic which makes the acting seem very good. On the other hand the acting is almost covered up by the way the movie was shot with a focus on realism.

Cinematography

Although the movie was shot with a hand held camera, it still looked very good. There are qualities of the picture that are absolutely essential to make it believable that the movie was shot with a hand held camera that the character Rob owned. The low light areas of the film were very grainy and the camera autofocuses throughout along with zooming in and out. The explosions and debris look very good, but the monsters leave much to be desired. This is a common problem with films these days and I almost hate to say it, but the computer generated monsters just don’t look as good as they should. It reminds me a lot of playing Resistance: Fall of Man for PS3. The graphics are great for a video game, but they are not good enough for a believable monster on screen. With that said, it still was some of the better CG that I have seen lately (I Am Legend). Overall the vast destruction of the city and buildings looks great and really brings you into a different world.

Directing

The directing in Cloverfield is almost like not directing at all. It obviously took a lot of effort, but it seems that to make things work best they would actually have to take a step back and let the actors run with it to make it more believable. That is a very hard thing to do in its own right so the directing was very good. The flow of the movie was very good with tie ins through out. Although the movie was made to look like an unplanned documentary, it was able to capture a well rounded story line and develop the characters well. In this movie the key was doing an absolutely great directing job while making it seem like there was not a director.

The Real Deal

I have mixed feelings about this movie. Although I really loved the idea of it, it is almost as if I like the idea more than the film itself. The idea of the movie looking like recovered video from a disaster like this one is great, but it was difficult to watch. There were a couple of times that I had to look away and regain my equilibrium. The movie is all about keeping you from what you really want to see and that is what I really love about it, but it almost seems that they blew it in the end. The movie was definitely worth the watch and is what I wish the Blair Witch Project had been like, but fell short of greatness because of just a few things. The main issue I had with the movie was the five minutes leading up to the last minute of the movie. When you see it let me know what you think. Overall the movie was very good and I recommend seeing it as it is something that has not been done before.
